Chula Vista wildlife control Tip of the Month:

A Description of the Life and Look of the Big Brown Bat
The big brown bat is one of the more interesting in the bat family. These animals are about four to 5 inches long, and their wingspan is about three times that distance. Interestingly enough, the females are actually much larger than the males, which gives them a significant advantage over their male counterpart. They are often much faster and more powerful, giving them the more dominant role within the ecosystem. Big brown bats have very sharp teeth and their bite is quite powerful. This makes it easy for them to choose through the hard exoskeleton of such animals as beetles and grasshoppers. These are the kinds of insects that are their primary source of food, but the brown bat will eat lots of different types of insects. Big brown bats are true insectivores, meaning they enjoy eating bugs such as flies, moths, wasps, and beetles. In warm weather climates, there is a large abundance of insects available to them and they thrive as the temperature gets warmer. These animals will take on a form of hibernation as the temperatures get cold or during heavy rains when food supplies are limited. This allows them to conserve their energy.

What Do They Look Like?
Both the little brown bat and the big brown bat live in North America, however, the larger version of the animal is often found in large quantities in warmer areas like desert regions. The smaller brown bat is more frequently found in regions in the northern United States and in Canada. The big brown bat is often found in the southwestern United States, Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. They have also been found in large quantities in the mountains of South America. Another big difference between the little brown bat in the big brown bat is that the big version is not just brown. The big brown bat can range in color from a very dark brown all the way through to a reddish look. The belly of this animal is also a lighter color than the other regions of his body. Some spots on the animal can even be black. This is usually found around the ears, wings, tail, and face.

Where Do They Live?
These bats are found it almost any type of ecosystem. While quite commonly found in rural areas, they have been found in large metropolitan cities as well. They enjoy roosting underneath the eaves of large skyscrapers, and have even been found in tunnels, stadiums, and churches. You are also likely to find them in trees and caves. They live in dense forest it areas, along rivers, and in towns. These are animals that are adaptable, allowing them to thrive in almost any warm weather area. How Long Do They Live? The big brown bat lives on average about 19 years. This is about three times longer than the little brown bat, which has a life expectancy of about seven years. Some of these larger bats live into their late 20s.
